How to Start a Therapy Blog Now to Boost Your Income


If you’re reading this, then you may have already read tons of posts about why you should blog or start a therapy blog.  That’s how I ended up here myself.


I used to work as a Child and Adolescent Therapist.  But I wasn’t making enough money from that job, so I decided that I might as well stay at home once I had my daughter.


I began researching ways to make money from home, and EVERYTHING I read suggested starting a blog.  So here I am.  Welcome to my mommy/therapy blog!


But you don’t have to be a stay-at-home mom to start a blog.


In fact, blogging can be a great side hustle or an excellent way to bring more business to your therapy practice.  Just know that it takes a lot of time and effort before you start to see results.  But luckily, there are tons of resources available to help you do things so much faster than those who paved the way before us.


So if you think that you’re ready to start a therapy blog, here is what you need to do, step-by-step.

How to Start a Therapy Blog: A Step-By-Step Guide

1. Start to think about your niche/desired audience.

If you’re a therapist, then finding a niche might not be as difficult for you as it is for some other bloggers.  The reason is that you probably have been working with a specific population as a therapist.  So if you are going to write to that specific population in your blog, then you already have your desired audience in mind.


However, if you work with a broad population or have a broad target audience, then this could actually work against you in the blogging world.  Instead of attracting everyone, you could just end up confusing your readers and turning them away from your blog.


So you want to get as specific as you can with your niche.  For instance, instead of your niche being a therapy blog for women, you could niche-down to it being a postpartum depression blog or a therapy blog for women going through divorce.  Narrowing down your target audience could lead to you becoming the go-to person for that niche.


If you’re not sure how you want to niche down, then I would suggest just diving in with your broad niche and waiting to see what your readers like.  After a couple months, you should have a better idea of which direction to go.


If you know for sure that you want to blog about two unrelated topics, then another alternative would be to start two different blogs.  But that’s for later on down the road.  Don’t overwhelm yourself with that thought now.


Once you know who your target audience is, think about your ideal reader and have that reader in mind for everything you do.

2. Choose a web hosting service and platform

This might all sound confusing at first, but over time, you’ll get the hang of things.  First, you want to sign up for a web hosting service.  This costs a few dollars per month.  Your host is where all of your blog’s files, including your URL (web address), will be stored.


Note: If you own a therapy practice and already have a website, then you probably don’t need this step.  Instead, you might just start a new page on your website for your blog.  Also, be sure to include “Blog” in the navigation bar of your website.


The web hosting service I currently use is Siteground (affiliate link).  I actually just switched from Bluehost to Siteground a couple weeks ago because Siteground boasts faster speed for your web site.  And so far so good!  I’ve already noticed a huge difference customer service. Siteground is really quick and thorough in responding to questions.


So once you have a domain name in mind for your website, then it’s time to sign up for web hosting.  P.S. Registering a domain name will cost a little (I believe about $30 for the year).


A note about coming up with your domain name… Make sure your domain isn’t too long.  Don’t use any trademarked company names within your domain.


And make sure that when you say and spell your domain name out, there aren’t any provocative or unfortunate words in it.  For instance, “The Pen is Blue” might be your dream blog name, but if you put the letters together, followed by a .com, you’ll be having a different target audience heading your way (if you catch what I’m saying).


So here are the simple steps you need to take to sign up for web hosting through Siteground:

Step 2: Choose a domain name

You might have to tweak your domain name a little if the one you have in mind is taken.  You can always come back to this page if you need some more time to tweak the domain name.

Step 3: Review and complete your order

Choose how many years you want to pay for now.

Step 4: Log into your Siteground account to set up your WordPress platform is the platform that is generally recommended to start with, unless you are super techy.  This is where you will write your blog posts and control and design your site.


WordPress is a little technical and clunky, but it’s free and widely used.  Once your blog takes off, then you might consider switching to a more user-friendly paid platform (I hear good things about Squarespace).


So here’s what you need to do to install WordPress for free.

  • After signing in to Siteground, you may receive a pop-up asking you if you want to install WordPress.
    1. If so, follow the recommended steps.
    2. If not, go to the Support tab, open a new ticket, and inform Siteground that you would like them to install WordPress.


3. Set up your theme

Don’t worry about getting this perfect now.  You can start with a free theme and then get a paid theme when you’re more comfortable with blogging and ready to take your blog to the next level.


I got tired of running into problems with using a free theme pretty quickly, plus I wanted some extra tools that would help with growing my list of email subscribers.  So after a few months, I invested in the Divi theme by Elegant Themes because helps you build beautiful pages very easily.  It’s also a much cheaper option for creating landing pages compared to other products out there (you’ll learn more about landing pages later).


You might be prompted to choose a free theme to start off with when installing WordPress.  But you can also access available themes by logging into your WordPress Dashboard, then clicking on Appearance on the left-hand panel, and then by clicking on Themes.


After you install a WordPress theme, you will want to click Activate to make it go live.  You can customize it by going to Appearance on the left-hand panel and then clicking on Customize.  You can then play around with things like fonts, colors, and your header, footer, and sidebar.


4. Install some needed plugins

Plugins are sort of like add-ons that help your blog to function better or perform certain tasks.  I recommend starting off with these plugins.  You will want to install and activate them.  Just don’t install them all at once.  It’s better to install 1 or 2 per day so you can make sure your site responds to them well.


To install these, you will log into your WordPress Dashboard, click Plugins on the left-hand panel, and click Add New.  Then type these in the search bar.  These plugins are all free with advanced pro versions available.

  • Askimet Anti-Spam – This protects your blog against spam.
  • Jetpack – This helps with security.
  • Google Analytics for WordPress – This will help you to analyze your traffic and what’s resonating with your audience.
  • W3 Total Cache – This helps to enhance the speed and performance of your site.


And there you have it!  You’ve got the technical part of your blog set up and ready to go!


Although, I have to warn you, that this is near the part where I got stuck and ended up sitting on my blog for about 6 months without actually launching it. So I HIGHLY recommend taking a blogging course to help you get started. That’s what I did to finally get unstuck.
